What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

First physiotherapy appointments usually last around 45 to 60 minutes, allowing time for a thorough assessment and for treatment to begin during the same visit.

Your physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms and how they affect daily life, then assess your movement, strength and joint function. Some tests may bring on familiar pain, which helps identify the cause. You will also discuss what you want to achieve from physiotherapy.

After the assessment, your physiotherapist will explain the likely cause of your symptoms and outline the most appropriate treatment. This often includes a tailored exercise programme and practical advice, alongside hands on treatment where appropriate.

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows movement and access to the area being treated. Shorts are recommended for lower limb problems, and a vest may be helpful for shoulder or upper back issues. Please also bring a list of any medications you are taking.

Many patients leave their first session feeling clearer and more confident, with early improvements in pain or movement and a personalised plan to continue their recovery.

What Does a Physiotherapist Do?

A physiotherapist helps people recover, improve, or maintain their physical mobility, function, and overall well-being. Their work focuses on rehabilitation, injury prevention, and pain management.

Not usually. Most physiotherapists are not medical doctors (MDs), but they are highly trained healthcare professionals with specialised education in physical therapy.

For General Appointments:

  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Clothes that allow free movement.

Depending on the Body Part:

  • Shoulder/Arm/Neck: Tank top or sleeveless shirt so your physio can access and assess that area easily.
  • Back/Core: A comfy t-shirt and maybe shorts or leggings — so they can see posture and spinal movement.
  • Hip/Knee/Leg/Ankle: Shorts are best — even if it’s cold, wear them under sweatpants so you can slip them off.
  • Foot: Bring your usual footwear (especially if it’s about walking/running), and wear socks.
