Chris Branch from Forté Physical Health tells us about the Hylands Estate and Hylands House.
Hylands Estate sits to the South of Chelmsford and is a beautiful environment to explore for free, 365 days a year.
In the centre of the estate is Hylands House, a grade II listed Neo-Classical elegant villa with meticulously restored period rooms from both Georgian and Victorian eras. Originally built in 1730, the house underwent a full renovation which was a 20-year project starting in 1987 and finishing in 2007. The house is a magnificent spectacle and can be visited one Sunday a month. They also host many events there during the year. I have been to a few business events hosted there, and it always adds a sense of history to the occasion.
And there is a good Wikipedia article on the history of the House here
Hylands Estate has 574 acres of land, including ancient woodlands, grassland, ponds, lakes and formal gardens. It’s open free of charge every day of the year. It’s great for dog walkers, ramblers, families and runners. With its undulations and eclectic mix of terrain, it’s one of my favourite places to go running!
There are two cafes to keep the visitors fuelled with coffee and cake and offer their legs a rest. Once a month, Hylands Estate hosts a farmers market which sells the best of our local produce.
There is a fantastic children’s play area known as ‘Adventure Castle’. Honestly, I wish things like this were around when I was a child! I often take my two and four-year-old children there and they go crazy. It’s safe, fun and challenging for them. It has ramps, rope ladders, slides, swings and all sorts of fun hiding places for the kids to make up games and have fun. It’s a great way to keep them active.
The park not only provides history, natural beauty and family fun, but it is also a hive of social activity. It is common to see dog walking groups, keep fit classes or mums groups meet up and use the grounds.
All in all, Hylands Estate provides fantastic value for our Chelmsford community. If you haven’t been, you should take a visit! Hylands House is only a short drive from the centre of Chelmsford do if you come to visit us at the clinic, maybe drop by there for a look. (or the 351 bus runs from centre of Chelmsford to The Estate every 30 minutes during the day).
