What should I wear?
Firstly, wearing clothes that you feel comfortable moving in will help us greatly in the assessment and treatment. We can treat through light clothing like gym gear, but it is very difficult to treat effectively through jeans and smarter clothing like a shirt and trousers which is less flexible.
For certain problems we may need you to remove an item of clothing so we can see how your body moves and provide more effective treatment, but if you are uncomfortable with this please tell your therapist.
We have towels which we can lay over you when you are being treated to keep you warm and comfortable.
Should I come if I am in extreme pain?
Most of the time, we can help people who are in extreme pain and it is worth a visit to get things moving in the right direction. However, if you are really struggling to move, please chat to one of our therapists over the phone. We will help you decide if treatment is the best option.
Do I have treatment on my first visit?
Our first treatments are one hour, and this includes time to take a thorough case history where we discuss your problem and start the diagnosis process. We then go through a movement assessment which is where we find out what your problem is and why it has happened.
We leave plenty of time to have a full treatment on your first visit.
Follow-up visits can be shorter as we don’t need to go through the case history in as much detail, but we go through another assessment, because, hopefully, you change!
Does treatment hurt?
At Forte Physical Health, we follow strict rules that treatment should not hurt. We encourage our patients to tell us how the treatment feels and if it is too much we back off.
However, it should be noted that there is a difference between tenderness and pain. There are times where we have to press firmly on the body to make the structural change that will lead to healing, and this can feel tender, but it should feel like a ‘nice’ tenderness.
If at any point the treatment doesn’t feel right, you are always welcome to tell your therapist.
How long will it take to get better?
Unfortunately, this is where we use the cliche “how long is a piece of string?”. Each problem is different, and even the same problem in different people can take different lengths of time to recover.
Health is multi-factored, and recovery time is related to the severity of the injury, the length of time you have had it, your age, your lifestyle, even your diet.
However, our goal as a clinic is to get you on the mend as quickly as possible and also to give you strategies to take home with you so you can manage your problem.
During your first visit, we give a clear explanation of what we think your problem is and an estimate for how long it will take to get better. As we see you recover, this may change, but we can normally give a pretty accurate idea fairly early on in your treatment.
Should I see my doctor first?
If you have any worries that you have an illness, or want to run something by your doctor first, you should always check in to put your mind at ease.
However, most back and joint pain can be treated straight away with us, without the need for a referral.
We have close relationships with our local GPs, and if there is anything we want to get checked out, we can write a referral letter so you get the right care you need.
Some insurers do need you to see your doctor first, so when you have a new injury, we always recommend calling your insurer first and seeing if you can come straight here or if you need a referral.
Am I covered with my health insurance?
We are registered with most health insurers, including AXA-PPP, Vitality, Simply Health and many others.
However, we are not linked with BUPA.
We always recommend calling your insurer first to get your authorisation code and to check whether you need a referal from your GP first.
Do you have parking?
Yes, we have plenty of private parking, just for you! You can drive down the side of our building to our car park.
Is there disabled access?
Yes, we have a ramp leading up to our back door, and we have a disabled toilet. Our disabled patients have always been happy with our facilities, but it should be noted that we have loose pea-shingle on our car park. This can make it slightly more difficult for wheelchairs, but most mange with no problems.
